54-year-old Hyannis man charged with A&B causing serious bodily injury to police officer…
HYANNIS – This past Sunday – November 18, 2018 – Barnstable Patrol Officers were dispatched to a report of an intoxicated male requesting medical attention because he had been drinking for four days.
While responding, officers were updated that the intoxicated man had a history of “assaultive and unpredictable behavior,” according to the police report.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the intoxicated man to the rear of the building. The man was reportedly displaying actively resistant behavior, pulling his arms away while a patrolman was trying to place him handcuffs. After a struggle, officers were able to place the intoxicated man into handcuffs.
While leaning against a police cruiser, the intoxicated man reportedly ignored rescue workers, who were trying to see if he needed medical attention, while shouting profanities and threats at police officers. The commotion was so loud, a number of residents of the apartment complex reportedly came out into the street and onto balconies to see what was going on.
At some point during his angry shouting, the intoxicated man reportedly made good on his threats by intentionally rearing his head back and headbutting a Barnstable Police Patrolman in the face.
According to the report, the headbutt was delivered “with power and malice…”
In the end, an officer who responded to the man’s call for help was seriously injured and taken to Cape Cod Hospital for x-rays and emergency medical care for a broken nose. (NOTE: The fracture to the officer’s nose could have been much worse, and the officer is now reportedly “okay…”)
