UPDATED: Victims Identified
MID CAPE HIGHWAY - Around 5:45 AM State Police from the South Yarmouth Barracks responded to a fatal crash on the eastbound side of the Mid Cape Highway just before Exit 7. At least one person was Med Flighted from the scene. State Police completely closed down the eastbound side of the Mid-Cape for nearly one hour.
According to State Police Officials a preliminary investigation by Trooper Steven Culver indicates an 18 year-old female was operating a 1998 Subaru Forester on Route 6 East when she lost control of the vehicle, entered the median and rolled over.
The operator, who was not wearing her safety belt, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased on the scene. An 18 year-old female passenger, who was wearing her safety belt, was transported by medical helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with serious injuries. The identity of both the operator and the passenger are being withheld pending family notification.
This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Barnstable Fire Department, Yarmouth Fire Department and MassHighways assisted troopers at the scene.
UPDATE: State Police have released the names of the victims of this crash. The driver, Nicole V. Scleparis, age 18 of Plymouth was driving the vehicle, was not wearing her seat belt and died in the crash at the scene. Her passenger, Emily M. Sylvia of Davenport, Fla., age 18, who was wearing her seat belt, was transported by Med-Flight helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with serious injuries. Her condition was not available.
