On Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at 8:00 a school bus driver notified the Yarmouth Police Department that a student had reported a suspicious man at her bus stop.

Yarmouth Police School Resource Officer William P. Coughlan, assigned to the Mattacheese Middle School, met with the student and subsequently obtained information that may indicate two separate incidents.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday, October 2nd at approximately 3:00 PM at the after school bus stop at the intersection of White Rock Road and Freeman Road in Yarmouthport.  This incident involved a man approaching her and waving his hand at her in a ‘come here’ type of motion.

The second incident occurred Wednesday morning at approximately 7:20 AM at a bus stop on German Hill Road in Yarmouthport.  This incident involved a man in a truck driving up to a student and asking for help finding his dog.

In both incidents, information is somewhat vague and neither incident involved any physical touching or attempts. Both incidents are currently under investigation.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Yarmouth Police Department Detective Eric H. Nuss at 508-775-0445 extension 132.

As a reminder—the Yarmouth Police Department—in conjunction with the Freemasons of Massachusetts—and the American Dental Association, is conducting a free child identification program at the Yarmouth Seaside Festival Fairgrounds this Saturday, October 6th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

General Child Crime Prevention Tips

·          Explain to your child that a stranger is someone they do not know, nor do you.

·          Never take a ride from a stranger.

·          Teach your child that adults usually do not ask children for directions or help in finding something like a lost animal. If someone should stop in a car asking directions or help in finding a lost animal, tell your child not to go to the car.
