2007 TOP STORIES: The Landscaper Who Came in from the Cold (please stand by as this very large file loads)

By Robert J. Bastille on 30 December, 2007 14:59:00

In the fall of 2006, finishing treatment after several tick bites, hands swollen from 10 years of hauling tons of leaves up into dump trucks, I could hardly hold a pen- let alone use one to capture anything meaningful.

2007 seemed a question mark, I needed to let my body begin to heal from some recent health conditions.  Suddenly looking old and tired at age 42, weathered, and cranky at those who knew me, even crankier at those who didn’t.  Landscaping everyday was now, sadly, completely out the question on a regular basis.

A dear friend compared me to an ornery gray mutt, breakin’ my balls for sitting around moping, continually telling me to get my “fat ass” outside and just do something.  He’s a balzy and brave soul, and quite fond of himself, just managing to escape before I could manage get my hands on him.  He continued on like that for a bit, each time just barely adverting a certain bludgeoning on his short journey to Kingdom Come.  I’d say, “Now Tommy, I’ll get up when I’m good and ready, not a moment sooner –  Now come over here so I can get a closer look at ya…”  He knew better to come too close.

So how did one moody and tired old landscaper manage to top and out-scoop the local news scene with some of the region’s most important stories?

Here are my TOP 10 TIPS for out-scooping the competition:

  1. Act like you gotta pair, even when that’s debatable
  2. Never ever take “No” as an answer, unless you’re immediately subject to arrest
  3. Never ever leave home without a camera, scanner, and bullet proof vest
  4. It helps to have a well trained dog for backup
  5. Whine and complain often, especially when it looks like you won't get your way
  6. Learn to retreat and advance from every position you take
  7. Maintain more alliances than strategic foes- but truly love everyone in a special way
  8. Learn to eat "drive thru" around the clock
  9. Always have a decent supply of cigars for those odoriferous scenarios, dead bodies, etc...
  10. GIVE THE READERS WHAT THEY WANT:  videos and photos, lots and lots of ‘em!

Memorize THE GOLDEN RULE OF REPORTING (and this I learned the hard way):

“Do unto others only that which you can get away with!”

The following is dedicated mainly to the BARNSTABLE POLICE FORCE for all their help, patience, and friendship during 2007
