BREAKING NEWS: SEXUAL PREDATOR with CAPE TIES charged with RAPE of 6 year old BOY (PRESS CONFERENCE VIDEO)

Hyannis News just learned after a brief conversation with WRKO radio talk show host Howie Carr (broadcast here locally between 3 - 7pm on 95.1 FM) that the Boston Globe is currently reporting that Corey Saunders, who was recently charged with raping a 6 year old New Bedford boy, had ties to the Cape.  Apparently, in 1994 Saunders (a child himself at the time) was found wandering the streets all alone holding his teddy bear.  Authorities learned that Saunders had been missing and neglected for at least 14 hours.  Saunders' mother signed the boy over to DSS after an investigation into the child’s welfare.  Saunders was treated at the Cape Cod Hospital psychiatric ward where Doctors learned he had lower than average intelligence and also presented signs of developmental disability.

Bristol Superior Court Judge Richard Moses, who ruled for SAUNDERS (A LEVEL 3 SEX OFFENDER) and allowed him to be released in 2006, received scathing criticism today from many radio talk show commenters for what they feel was gross negligence and dangerously poor discretion which led to the horrific rape of a 6 year old boy after he was cornered and threatened in a New Bedford library.

.

SAUNDERS is a convicted child rapist and many are heatedly debating whether or not it was appropriate for him to be released into the community.  SAUNDERS was deemed highly likely to re-offend.  Many are also debating whether or not Massachusetts Judges, who currently have no checks and balances when it comes to negligent decisions, should be held accountability to the citizens.  This recent rape by a released Level 3 Sex Offender raised many questions amongst radio commenters such as "What is wrong with this judge?" and "Should there be a way to remove these judges from the bench?"

New Bedford Police express their frustration with the Judge’s decision during a press conference.

NEW BEDFORD POLICE PRESS RELEASE:  SEXUAL PREDATOR ARRESTED AFTER RAPING 6 YEAR OLD BOY IN LIBRARY

New Bedford, MassachusettsAt 5:45 PM on January 30, 2008 the New Bedford Police Communications center received a call that a 6 year old boy had just been assaulted in the Downtown Public Library.

Immediately patrol units responded to the library and determined that a 6 year old boy had been enticed to commit sexual acts and raped by a Level 3 Sex Offender named Corey SAUNDERS (26 years old).

Patrol and detective units throughout the city searched for SAUNDERS extensively and a short time later, Detective Albert Silva and Christopher Andrade of the Juvenile Division and Sexual Assault Unit located SAUNDERS standing on the steps of an area homeless shelter. SAUNDERS was taken into custody and transported to New Bedford Police Headquarters where he was charged and processed by Officer Samuel Ortega before being brought to the Bristol County Ash Street Jail for detention.

SAUNDERS was arraigned this morning at New Bedford 3rd District Court and was held WITHOUT BAIL pending a Dangerousness Hearing to be held on February 7th at the New Bedford 3rd District Court. District Attorney Sam Sutter will personally be presenting this case to the judge, symbolizing his level of concern and commitment to keep dangerous criminals such as SAUNDERS off the streets.

SAUNDERS was convicted in 2001 of: (1) Indecent Assault & Battery Upon A Child Under 14 (12 year old boy), and; (2) Attempted Rape Of A Child. He agreed to a sentence of (4) years and (1) day to serve on the first charge and (12) years probation on the second. In December 2006, after serving his sentence, the former district attorney’s office filed a petition to have SAUNDERS held as a Sexually Dangerous Person.

Despite the testimony of two, court-appointed, psychological expert witnesses as well as a third psychological expert witness for the Commonwealth that SAUNDERS was an extremely sexually dangerous person that should be held, Presiding Judge Richard Moses ruled for SAUNDERS and allowed him to be released.

Information from the investigation so far is that SAUNDERS had been staying in the Boston area until recently when he came to New Bedford. SAUNDERS registered with the New Bedford Police Department as a Level 3 Sex Offender on January 17, 2008 and appears to have been staying at various shelters until his arrest last night.

If convicted, SAUNDERS faces a term of LIFE IMPRISONMENT for the above charges.

  • Hi Rob - Welcome back. I did not post on your site earlier, and I suspect it was you know who. They apparently went wild on the COG today while I was at church helping out with the Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast. Most blogs in town have to be moderated now because these trolls have been attacking sites, generally trying to stir up old news. Speaking of news, hope you get back to bringing us the latest Hyannis happenings real soon. In the future, just check the IP, and you will know which posts are really from me. Thanks. ~T

  • Thank you "Taryn" for keeping things in perspective out here. I also want to thank you for keeping things clean and respectful. This is one of the saddest and most tragic stories so far this year and people who take the opportunity to make comments to further their own agenda after a story of this nature will not be tolerated.

  • This story is very upsetting. As a mother I worry about peds, and I think the Judge should be held reponsible. I had a problem once with a sophmoric petulant napolianic neighbor who said some things to my 6 year old child, but that incident in no way compares with what happened to this poor child and his family last week. The child in this story will never be the same. When I read this story I thought, "from now on I am going to worry about more REAL problems than IMAGINARY ones."

  • To the last commenter re: JJ: I deleted that last message because you want to put someone in the boat with this sick child rapist. I'm not sure why you did that or who you are, but I cannot host comments that belittle the horrific nature of this recent rape of a six year old boy. If you have a seperate story that needs to be told, please feel to reach me at HyNews@HyannisNews.com , leave you're name and number and someone would be more than happy to reach out and confirm your allegations.
