Hyannis pup and owner reunited same day

HYANNIS - Imagine the awful sinking feeling after waking up and noticing your new best friend missing!

According to Jessica Staton of HelpMeFindMyPet.com that's exactly what happened recently to Shannon Woodward and her young Rusty, both of Hyannis.

On the morning of June 3, 2009, Shannon woke and young Rusty was nowhere to be found.

Shannon called HelpMeFindMyPet, a national pet recovery service she had heard about, to report him missing. They immediately emailed a missing pet poster with Rusty's photo to all their network members in the greater Hyannis area. Instantly, shelters, veterinary clinics, trainers, pet supply stores, and grooming shops within a 50-mile radius were all notified.

It was sort of like an 'Amber Alert' for puppies with a very happy ending!

A local shelter found Rusty and called HelpMeFindMyPet, who contacted Shannon Woodward. Both Shannon and Rusty were reunited and home safe and sound the very same day.

According to Jessica Staton, last year over 6 million pets were lost. Less than 7% of those lost animals were returned to their homes. Losing a pet is a crisis most people are not readily prepared to deal with. HelpMeFindMyPet.com is a service which helps pet owners prepare and manage such situations.

Poor little Rusty was sure glad there was a network 'looking out' on the mean streets of Hytown... one which had his back.

A round of biscuits for everyone who helped out with this one!

  • Wonder if this little guy knows how to doggie paddle? Now that the summer is upon us, it would be good to know if your pooch is a good swimmert. Personally, I've been been told my breast stroke is perfection, while strong muscular thighs help with a firm back position. In the last year, I've mastered 'the crawl' with elite marksmanship, in fact, so well that I'm sure I could crawl over two hours if the worthy prize was waiting for me! :)

  • I wonder if the little fella with the big brown 'melt me' eyes missed 'home' as much as the one at home, with those fires burnin, missed him? So glad to see they are reunited--and that the old phrase 'good things come to those who wait' are rewarded!

  • Oh Dear, imagine waking up and finding out your best friend is not near you anymore! How devistating, heartbreaking, gutwrenching, tear-jerking, and disallusioning. So glad Rusty was returned home. I hope all wayward lost are returned home to their rightful place--sooner than later. Those of us that send out a beacon signal, and keep the homefires burning, want to keep the glimmer of hope alive, that even though circumstances may take doggies and others from us, we keep them in our prayers that they come back to us in time. Like the old phrase says 'Home Is Where The Heart Is".

  • There would always be room in my heart & in my home for a little guy like this with big brown 'melt me' eyes! So glad he found his way 'home', he would have been thoroughly missed. I would travel over two hours on my knees just to bring his sweet face back to me! So glad his master didn't have to do that!

  • I hope the little guy doesn't make a break for it again--maybe a fenced yard is the trick, so that so many of these little guys don't get lost. A good leash with a dog tag might also do the trick. Losing a best friend is a hard thing to take, hopefully more owners of a good-hearted brude will take special care to not have it happen again. If given a second chance I'd take all precautions to not let my big hearted friend go too far from me! A round of gourmet biscuits to celebrate!
