WEST BARNSTABLE: Shortly after 5:00 PM Saturday afternoon, a serious one car crash on the Mid-Cape Highway completely shut down traffic in the west bound direction for the better part of one hour causing a massive backup that stretched for several . The accident occurred approximately 1/2 mile west of Exit 6 and the Burger King West Barnstable Service Area.

The accident is under investigation by State Trooper Jeffrey McCarthy who informed HyannisNews that the victim is a 74 year old woman who sustained serious, but apparently non life threatening injuries. She was Med-Flighted to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston by a State Police Helicopter. State Police completely stopped traffic on Route 6 to allow the Helicopter to land on the highway atop Shoot Flying Hill.
The woman was trapped in the wreck and was extricated by West Barnstable Fire Rescue personnel. A short time later the highway had to be completely shut down again to allow a large Buckler's Towing Wrecker to sit cross-ways of the highway so that it could lift the wreck over the guard rail. Once back on the highway, the car was placed on a Buckler's Flat Bed Truck and removed from the scene. Firefighters stood by with charged fire hoses as the vehicle was winched up the steep embankment in case a fire ignited the dry woods and leaves.
It appeared to HyannisNews at the scene, that the woman who was traveling alone west bound had just come over the top of Shoot Flying Hill when her Maroon Honda struck the guard rail on the median side of the highway. Her car jumped over the rail and tumbled down the steep 100' embankment into the trees below.
The accident remains under investigation so the exact cause of the accident is yet unknown. At the time of the accident, the skies were clear and the sun low in the afternoon sky prompting speculation that she may have been blinded by the sun as she came over the top of the hill.
