Centerville: April 29, 2007 at about 9:00 PM - Barnstable K-9 Police Officer John Campbell and his drug sniffing dog Rocky stopped a medium size pickup truck for a broken tail light near the Barnstable Adult Social Day Center on Main Street in Centerville.
The operator of the truck refused to show his hands and was being evasive when questioned by Officer Campbell. Apparently the driver is known by law enforcement and has fled from them in the past. The operator refused to keep the engine turned off and surrender his keys. Suddenly, the operator took off dragging Officer Cambell who was holding on to the side of the vehicle. .
Officer Cambell managed to hold on long enough in order to reach into the truck, grab the steering wheel, and divert the vehicle off Main Street onto a dirt driveway. In order to avoid serious injury Patrolman Cambell then needed to let go while the truck continued down a hill into someone's backyard. The driver then jumped out of the small truck and fled on foot.
.
Officer Campbell picked himself up and chased the suspect on foot in southerly direction on Main Street toward the Library, but lost him in the darkness when the chase continued behind the library. He called for backup and multiple police units responded.
It's important to note that this particular incident happened while many other Barnstable units were already responding to a seperate armed robbery scene.
At 10:00 PM, there was a massive police presence in Centerville with Barnstable Police Patrol Officers, Detectives, State Police, and Barnstable Sheriff’s Officers involved. Officer Campbell received scrapes and scratches during the chase but remained on the scene searching for the suspect.
In a brief interview with Officer Cambell Hyannis News learned that police are looking for Kevin Rocheteau who is described as being a black male, age 27, 5’ 9,” about 190 pounds… Officer Cambell has several leads that he’ll continue to work on throughout the night.
Rocheteau will likely be charged with Felony Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (a motor vehicle), Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, and Failure to Stop for a Police Officer. Hyannis News also learned that illicit drugs may also be a motive for the suspect’s sudden flight.
