Mr. Sorie Kondi was born blind into one of the top 3 poorest countries in the world. Sierra Leone, West Africa, leads the world in terms of having high infant mortality, short life expectancy, and low per capita income. Health care is scarce. "Dirt Poor" doesn't even begin to describe conditions in Sierra Leone.
Mr. Kondi never attended school but developed a special talent for music. As a teenager he took up the "kondi," a traditional instrument in the region. By 1984 he survived on small earnings, playing at ceremonies and travelling to nearby villages.
Being blind and poor is enough hardship by itself, but Mr. Kondi also survived a brutal civil war which devastated his surroundings in 1996.
When we listen to music we sometimes wonder what the artist is feeling. For most of us, it is virtually impossible to even come close to "feeling" the experiences which define Mr. Kondi... and one doesn't need know the meaning of his words to realize the genius that draws one closer to a unity of the soul.
