HYANNIS- What started off as an early morning domestic dispute turned into a dramatic takedown after heavily armed officers converged on a first floor apartment located at 112 Center Street.

At approximately 4:25am, after an ongoing investigation, Barnstable Police armed with rifles and tasers surrounded an apartment building in the East End of Hyannis after receiving information that their suspect was armed with a gun and making threats.  Minutes earlier an alert Officer Jeffrey Jackson returned to the Center Street address which was thought to be the suspect’s hiding place and noticed that a light had recently been turned off.  He notified his supervisors and all officers quickly received computerized messages in their cruisers regarding the suspect and the nature of the threat that faced them from inside the first floor apartment.

Hyannis News was on scene as the arrest took place and was able to film from a relatively safe distance using a high powered camera.

Sergeant Matthew Sonnabend, after insuring that his officers were safely positioned, approached the apartment’s door and identified himself as the Barnstable Police.  He told the suspect that they knew he was inside and that they were not going away.  He was able to lure the suspect out and the man was apparently secured in handcuffs without incident.

Suddenly things changed after the man became enraged when he noticed the victim of an earlier assault.  The man began to struggle with officers and needed to be taken to the ground.  During the struggle one officer observed that the suspect somehow became un-cuffed which put officers at an even higher level of danger.  Sergeant Sonnabend warned the man that he would be “tazed” if he didn’t cooperate.  A laser dot suddenly became visible on the suspect’s body and he quickly complied with the officers’ commands.  The sergeant did not need to deploy his taser and the man was re-cuffed and placed in a cruiser.

Barnstable Police are currently training additional officers in the use of tasers.  So far Barnstable Officers have only had to deploy a taser on one occasion…

Police searched and seized multiple items from a black Lexus parked outside the apartment, including:

-          a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun

-          ammunition

-          Multiple large plastic bags of what appeared to be marijuana

-          A scale

-          Other drugs, possibly cocaine

-          A hunting knife

-          A pile of 20 dollar bills and other cash

-          The black Lexus was towed back to the Barnstable Police Facility

The suspect is identified as JORGE SILVA, age 22, of 112 Center Street in Hyannis.  He is charged with the following:

Resisting Arrest

Intimidation of a Witness

Unlawful Possession of a Firearm

Possession of Class D – Marijuana (with Intent to Distribute)

Trafficking in Cocaine

Disorderly Person

2 counts of Assault and Battery Domestic Violence

Assault by means of a Dangerous Weapon – a knife

.

Patrolman Jeffrey Jackson is the primary arresting officer.

  • Good police work for the BPD! That video was better than watching COPS. It is a great PR spot for our slumping real estate market.
