Police Investigate Fatal Crash UPDATE

On Sunday, October 7, 2007 at 1:13 AM—the Yarmouth Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a single vehicle crash near the intersection of North Dennis Road and Cranberry Lane in Yarmouthport.

Upon arrival at the scene Police Officers and Fire Fighters found a 2007 Ford F350 pick up truck heavily damaged in the front yard of 37 North Dennis Road.  The female operator was trapped inside the vehicle and found in a fatal condition.  She has been identified as Kendall Grew—age 28—of Yarmouthport.

With assistance from the Massachusetts State Police the area was secured and traffic was diverted for approximately 3 hours.

A Crime Scene Investigator from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department was called to the scene and assisted with crash scene photography and evidence collection.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the pick up truck was traveling in excess of the posted speed limit northbound on North Dennis Road.  The vehicle crossed over the southbound lane—left the roadway—and struck a large tree at the driver’s door.  It also appears that the victim was wearing her seatbelt and both of the front air bags deployed.

The vehicle has been impounded at Yarmouth Police Headquarters as Yarmouth Police Crash Reconstruction Patrol Officer Gordon T. Gibbons and Yarmouth Police Detective Eric H. Nuss conduct the follow up investigation.

Police Continue Fatal Crash Investigation

While securing the fatal crash scene—providing assistance—and conducting the investigation—Yarmouth Police Officers encountered two men at the scene who had been in a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon just prior to the crash.  The passenger in the Jeep was Joshua Grew—the husband of the victim.  The operator of the Jeep was Brett A. Reardon—age 30— of West Yarmouth who is a close friend of the couple.

The on-scene follow-up investigation revealed that the Ford pick up truck and the Jeep Wrangler were both northbound on North Dennis Road.  The crash occurred and the occupants of the Jeep were immediately at the scene of the crash.  Both men were extremely upset and were provided immediate assistance. Grew was taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation and eventually released.

Reardon remained at the scene but repeatedly interfered with firefighters and police officers. Despite numerous and repeated attempts to console him throughout the dramatic situation—Reardon continued to be combative, threatening, and volatile.  He was determined to be intoxicated and was consequently placed under arrest for OUI Liquor—Disorderly Conduct—and Interfering with the Duties of a Firefighter.  He was transported to Yarmouth Police headquarters and is scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court on Tuesday, October 9, 2007.

There was no physical contact between the Ford pick up, the Jeep, or any other vehicle.

The Yarmouth Police Department is continuing the investigation.  Anyone with information about this tragedy is asked to contact Yarmouth Police Detective Eric H. Nuss at 508-775-0445 extension 150.
