LATEST UPDATE 6:00 PM (see below)
HYANNIS - At about 11:15 multiple Barnstable Police units were dispatched to the scene of a shooting inside a home at 36 General Patton Drive. The shooting victim was found in the living room with a gunshot wound to the chest.
It was reported to police that the suspects fled the scene to the rear of the residence in the direction of Bearse's Way. The suspects are described as 2 young black males wearing hooded jackets. Upon arrival officers immediately called for Hyannis Fire Rescue. Sergeant Sean E. Balcom was also called to the scene.
UPDATE: 12:00 PM
A press release from District Attorney Michael O'Keefe's office provided to HyannisNews by Sergeant Sean Sweeney of the Barnstable Police identified the victim of the shooting as Jacques Sellers age 18 (DOB 4/5/89). According to the press release he was shot while sitting in the home and it is believed that the shots were fired from outside the home. Sellers was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Hyannis Fire Rescue and pronounced dead at the hospital.
It was reported that investigators removed sections of the front of the home presumably where bullets may have penetrated the home.
This morning there was a significant Barnstable and State Police presence at the scene and police crime scene tape blocked off the entire road. The Barnstable Police Mobile Command Center was set up on the north side of the home where the victim was shot.
There was also a police presence around the corner from the house where the shooting took place. Any possible connection of that home to the shooting was not revealed by police at the scene.
We will provide additional updates as more information is learned.
UPDATE: 4:00 PM
There is a possibility that he victim of the shooting, Jacques Sellers, was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. Although the shooting was a deliberate act according to a statement by the the District Attorney, it is unsure if Jacques Sellers was the intended victim.
HyannisNews spoke with Barnstable Police detectives at the scene late Thursday afternoon, but they declined to say whether or not they have any specific suspects in mind. They did say however, that they have spoken with some of Jacques family members from North Carolina.
It would also appear that Police may have lost interest in another home in the area that earlier had police officers stationed out front. A check of that home about 3:30 PM showed that there was no police presence in front of that home at that time.
Police Officers continue to be stationed in front of the home where the shooting took place.
6:00pm UPDATE: Hyannis News was out in the neighborhood speaking with residents.
One neighbor heard the gunfire which originally sounded like fire crackers… according to this witness there were two quick shots, followed soon after by another four shots.
Residents of the area spoke of “fear” for the children, and used words like “survival” in explaining their day to day living experiences. General Patton Drive is a family neighborhood teaming with school age children. Numerous young children were out playing ball in front of shooting scene at the time of this report.
Members of that community say that Jacques Sellers was relatively new to the neighborhood. Police officials have little knowledge of victim.
An unconfirmed report has it that police tracked the suspects to a nearby residence where it’s believed they fled in a vehicle. Police have leads that they are currently working on…
A Barnstable Police command center and members of the department’s CART unit are remaining on General Patton Drive in an effort to reach out to residents and beef up police visibility.
