ORIGINAL HYANNIS NEWS STORY:
Hyannis – At approximately 7pm, Barnstable squad cars were dispatched to Hyannis Harbor in search of a swimming fugitive.

Other units were dispatched to the boat ramp on Lewis Bay Road on the other side of the harbor, where the suspect was last seen after being ejected from a fleeing stolen red Honda ATV after it abruptly entered the water.

From witnesses and radio chatter, the above female in cuffs [Top photo] was being pursued by Yarmouth Police from across the harbor when she made a last ditch effort to escape by swimming over to Hyannis.

Her freedom bid was dashed by Barnstable Patrolman Blondin waiting on a dock to the rear of the Dockside Restaurant. She was cuffed and escorted to an awaiting Barnstable Police patrol car.

The entire burst of action lasted just minutes leaving bystanders either stunned or laughing hysterically.

One witness was holding his gut from laughter as he tried to explain the scene, especially the part where the ATV hit the water and the driver went flying over the steering wheel into the drink. A nearby fisherman was reportedly casting and trying to hook the swimmer; witnesses were uncertain as to whether he was trying to help or apprehend her.

Even the police found humor after all was said and done.

It was a bizarre scene, and it’s fortunate no one was seriously injured.

Hyannis Rescue responded to evaluate the arrested female.

She showed no signs of serious injury.

Hyannis News will provide updates as they become available.
