Young boy killed… children were playing inside before shed burst into flames…
HYANNIS – An 8-year-old boy named Savvas Yianasmidis died in this afternoon’s fire according to Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe.
At about 5:24pm, police and firefighters rushed to 252 Hinckley Road for what was originally described as a house fire. It turned out to actually be a backyard shed fully engulfed in flames.
Witnesses told Hyannis News they heard a loud explosion before running over to find the neighbor’s backyard shed in flames. One neighbor said he saw two of the young children running out of the shed to escape the flames. But the remainder of the afternoon and early evening, everyone began to fear what actually happened to a young boy who was unaccounted for… Family of the young boy had their worst fears confirmed not long after the incident.
Initially police on scene reported an explosion, possibly involving a gas tank or some other highly combustible substance.
Billowing black smoke filled the air and could be seen from well across town.
The shed burned quickly, yet firefighters were quickly able to contain and knock down the flames. The shed was completely destroyed.
The scene is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with state police detectives working for the DA’s office…
Two people were reportedly evaluated after the fire. The extent and details of their injuries are uncertain.
