EXCEPTIONAL POLICE PROCEDURE CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Man resisted arrest after allegedly shoplifting and defecating on floor… also facing possession of drugs and dangerous weapon charges…
HYANNIS – As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, Barnstable Police officers went hands on and did an exceptional job safely securing a suddenly volatile suspect who was flailing his arms and resisting arrest…
… exceptional because they did it in tight quarters, without having to elevate the use of force.
At about 1:00AM this morning, police were called to the Cumberland Farms on West Main Street for a suspicious male possibly shoplifting items…
HN had a “sixth sense” feeling and decided to respond to what initially sounded like a routine shoplifting call.
Upon arrival, HN observed officers dealing with what appeared to be a cooperative shoplifting suspect… but had an unusual feeling I needed to document the routine scene, that it could possibly turn violent…
It being relatively slow at the time of the call, other officers stopped into the store to provide an abundance of support to the initial officers on scene…
… and it’s a good thing they did because things escalated quickly!
HN suddenly looked up from a distance and observed what appeared to be the suspect fighting with officers. I immediately turned on my camera and moved in closer to document the fray and render assistance should officers need it. (In this case there were plenty of officers already in the store, thanks to it being slow at the time.)
As you will see, moments into the fray, after moving in closer and leveling the camera, officers were trying to restrain the man’s arms and upper body prior to taking him to the ground in the aisle between the Slim Jim and Goldfish racks.
You will notice officers maintained a very professional and composed demeanor, not using any more force than was necessary. At least one Taser was ready, but was not deployed…
HN NOTE: It’s important to note that officers did not know that HN was filming at this point…
The volatile suspect was persuaded to sit in the back of a cruiser and was eventually transported to the Barnstable Police Department Headquarters for booking.
HN spoke with the female store clerk who had been all alone at the time when the man initially entered the store. He made her feel uneasy when he allegedly started taking items into the bathroom. The clerk was shaken up by the violent outburst and admitted to still being a bit anxious when speaking with HN afterward.
The suspect allegedly defecated on the bathroom floor prior to police arriving on scene. Police are looking into shoplifting charges, resisting arrest charges, drug possession charges (cocaine), and a charge of possession of dangerous weapon (“switchblade”).
The following HN Video highlights the entire call…

UPDATE – The following is the actual BPD press statement:
February 7, 2018
At approximately 1:00 AM on 2/7/2018 the Barnstable Police responded to the Cumberland Farms convenience store at 395 West Main St., Hyannis for a report of a male subject shoplifting. Upon arrival, units encountered the suspect, 28-year-old Marlon L. Green of Hyannis, who was inside the men’s room. Further investigation revealed that Green had allegedly selected several items of merchandise and entered the men’s room where he concealed the items on his person. When officers attempted to take Green into custody, he became actively resistant by physically pulling away from officers and failing to comply with verbal commands. Green was ultimately taken into custody and transported to the Barnstable Police Facility where he was booked on charges of Shoplifting, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct, Possession of Narcotics, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon, and Protective Custody.
Green was arraigned in Barnstable District Court and held without bail on a probation violation.
