INITIAL HN COVERAGE:
WEST YARMOUTH – At about 1:25 am, police and firefighters responded to reports that a SUV had just slammed into a utility pole on Route 28 in the area of Springer Lane.
HN arrived moments after first responders and as you will see in the following HN Video, a major transformer bearing utility pole was completely snapped, with the SUV wedged into the pole, live wires apparently dangling but not touching the ground.
Power appeared to be out in the area.
The driver amazingly was able to walk away from the wreckage. Police spoke at length with the male driver. He was given FSTs (Field Sobriety Tests) and taken into custody after their completion.
Route 28 needed to be completely closed down from Higgins Crowell Road to West Yarmouth Road, and remained shut down at the time of this report, approximately 4:00 am. It is likely Route 28 will remain shut down into later morning hours…
