LIFE IN THE FAST LANE: Revere man arrested for speeding on Mid-Cape Highway while high on crack…
WEST BARNSTABLE – It was about 12:50 a.m., Friday, January 4, 2019, when a trooper clocked a vehicle with New Hampshire plates going 75 MPH in a posted 55 MPH zone on Route 6, according to a report filed in Barnstable District Court.
The eastbound vehicle suddenly swerved off the highway at Exit 5, where the trooper followed and flipped on his blue lights in the rotary. The vehicle reportedly turned onto Route 149 and then right onto the Service Road, where it “then jammed on the brakes, stopping abruptly.”
When asked, the driver admitted to having his cruise control set at 75 MPH, according to the report.
The driver was reportedly speaking rapidly while tapping his leg, as if he couldn’t sit still. His pupils were allegedly dilated and had little reaction to light.
A computer check revealed the driver had a suspended license “due to an immediate threat” on November 21, 2018. When asked whether he knew his license was suspended, the driver reportedly stated, “yeah, for speeding.”
During roadside sobriety assessments, the driver appeared unsteady on his feet, eventually admitting to smoking “crack” just before driving to the Cape from Revere, according to the report.
When questioned further, the driver allegedly admitted to having more crack stashed under his seat.
The driver was then placed under arrest.
A female passenger also admitted to possessing a quantity of Crack Cocaine, pulling a purple container out of her pocket which contained “small white rocks.”
The passenger was then also placed under arrest.
A search of the vehicle uncovered another purple container containing small white rocks. The trooper also discovered and seized a copper crack pipe.
The vehicle was towed and both suspects were transported to the Massachusetts State Police barracks in South Yarmouth.
The passenger, Lori Vazza, was charged with Possession of a Class B Substance/Crack Cocaine.
The driver, John Collazzo, age 56, of Revere, was charged with Subsequent Offense OUI-Drugs, Subsequent Offense Possession of a Class B Substance/Crack Cocain, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Operating with a Suspended License, and Speeding.
Collazzo’s bail was set at $500 cash at his arraignment this past Friday. He is scheduled to appear back in Barnstable District Court for a pretrial hearing on February 8, 2019.
* All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
