BARNSTABLE – At about 5:00PM, a Barnstable patrolman at Millway Beach reported seeing what witnesses say was the 7th distress flare shot up from an area near or beyond the tip of Sandy Neck.
Barnstable FD almost immediately launched one of their boats to search the area from Barnstable Harbor out toward the open waters of Cape Cod bay.
By the time the 9th flare was spotted, West Barnstable FD had deployed their personnel in the area of Sandy Neck Beach, also sending an all terrain vehicle out over the sandy pathways toward the tip of Sandy Neck, a linear distance of about 6 miles…
Sandwich FD sent one of their boats out into Cape Cod Bay.
A Coast Guard plane made multiple fly overs, searching the waters and shoreline…
… ultimately nobody was found.
By 8:30PM, organized search efforts were called off for the evening…
… with the 9 or more flare sightings remaining a mystery… for now.
