On Monday, August 13, 2007 at 7:35 PM—Yarmouth Police Patrol Investigator Christopher Van Ness observed a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Town Brook Road and Buck Island Road in West Yarmouth.
Patrol Investigator Van Ness activated his marked police cruiser emergency lights and siren and attempted a motor vehicle stop but the vehicle did not stop—increased its speed—and drove off eastbound on Buck Island Road.
As the vehicle approached Buck Island Village Condominiums it suddenly stopped and veered into the crowded condominium complex parking lot. The operator jumped out of the vehicle and ran towards the wooded area. Patrol Investigator Van Ness ordered the suspect to stop and the suspect was placed in custody.
Neither the operator, nor the female passenger, had any identification paperwork with them and attempts were made to confirm their true identity. The vehicle registration plate was found to belong to a 2005 Toyota and in fact was unregistered and uninsured and has been impounded.
Further investigation eventually revealed the operator and passenger had lied about their true identity. The operator was taken to Yarmouth Police Headquarters and was arraigned in the Barnstable District Court On Tuesday, August 14th.
