HYANNIS - TOWNHALL - It was the most logical decision to make!

Paul MacDonald successfully persevered in his efforts as he finally convinced the Town of Barnstable to hire him as a full-time police officer... many years ago.  He then served as a beat cop.  Went on to spend long hours behind the wheel as a “trol” checking doors and taking names… He trained a dog named “Tobey” and served in a K-9 unit.  He visited public schools and spoke with early teens in a Seventies extracurricular program called "What's a Cop?"

.

In Spring, he put young Summer Officers through rigorous morning paces and pushups, barking out commands like a salty drill instructor.  He would starkly remind the 30 to 40 recruits of the importance of physical conditioning, especially when trying to put someone in cuffs after a foot chase; physical conditioning often meant the difference between life and death.   He was a no-nonsense well respected taskmaster in all forms of training.

Paul MacDonald also worked on the motorcycle patrol.  He worked his way up to Sergeant… then Lieutenant, forming the much needed existing Traffic Division.

Throughout his career, Officer MacDonald exhibited the highest degree of professionalism and fairness in his dealings with the public.  As a leader, he constantly encourages all officers to diligently build positive but firm relationships with the public, coupled with a consistent and dependable visibility and presence.  His demeanor is friendly, yet one that quietly commands respect.

Last October the Barnstable Police Force was in dire need of a new town-oriented dependable leader.  “Lieutenant” MacDonald quickly became a favorite remedy and replacement for former Chief John Finnegan.

From October 2006 to the present, “Acting” Chief MacDonald served the town (and I hate clichés, but...) with distinction “Above and Beyond” the call of duty.

Last night the Barnstable Town Council approved and officially appointed Paul MacDonald “Chief of Police.”  It was probably one of the wisest and easiest decisions made by town officials in quite a while.

The very best Police Chiefs have risen up through our own ranks.  Past Barnstable Chiefs have had statewide reputations for being both driven and tough.  In "the old days" police work focused more on just muscles and guts, equipment was different and officers needed to "go hands on" much more frequently, often without backup.  Today, officers still need to get physical, but the demands are more a combination of physical tactics, teamwork, and brains... the world has changed and prepared police officers need much more training!  Chief MacDonald possesses a knowledge of the old school, but more importantly he has successfully adapted to the NEW.  Known for producing leaders able to progressively grow through changes, the Barnstable Police Department has an ongoing longstanding reputation as being one of the finest in Commonwealth (arguably nationwide).  It is a uniquely competitive agency and Chief MacDonald has done a tactfully fine job at fostering and maintaining much needed teamwork and professionalism.  Hyannis News has duly noted that Chief MacDonald is off to an admirable start.

  • I SECOND THAT EMOTION............
