HYANNIS- Tuesday night, at approximately 10:30pm Barnstable Police Cruisers were notified by dispatch regarding a high-speed pursuit in progress entering their town down Route 28 from Mashpee.

Mashpee Patrol Units had just attempted to identify the occupants of a 4-door Honda Civic when the vehicle suddenly fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed.

Moments later Barnstable Police spotted the vehicle passing Route 149 heading toward Centerville.

Additional Barnstable Units converged on the pursuit and reported that Mashpee and Barnstable County Sheriff cruisers were already closely following the vehicle.

After turning right onto Old Stage, heading south toward Craigville Beach, the vehicle suddenly changed course again and made its way back onto Route 28 in Centerville.  At this point multiple police units from at least 4 different agencies, including Massachusetts State Troopers, were involved in the chase.  Lieutenant Packer, Barnstable Police Watch Commander, ordered all Barnstable Units to back off from high speeds and to continue on to assist the other agencies that were already closer to the suspects.

Moments after crossing into Hyannis on Route 28, the Honda Civic left the roadway and drove onto the bike path in front of Founder’s Court just west of the Barnstable Middle School.  The vehicle came to a stop, resting against a small tree on the bike path’s embankment.  All occupants of the vehicle (believed to be at least 3 males) attempted to bail from the vehicle on foot.

According to police radio transmissions and Mashpee Deputy Chief Albert Todino, two of the occupants were quickly taken into custody…with one of the suspects taken down behind one of the buildings in the area of Founder’s Court.  Fortunately, nobody was injured during the chase.

According to police radio transmissions, one of the suspects in custody was under arrest for narcotics.

Hyannis News was on scene as several K-9 units began to search for the third suspect in the area of Captain Ellis Lane and a wooded area on the north side of Route 28.

As many as twenty police units from 4 different agencies set up a perimeter and stopped suspicious vehicles suspecting that the suspects may have called for another vehicle to help them escape.

Meanwhile Mashpee Patrolmen did an inventory search of the Honda Civic and had it towed from the scene.

At approximately 11:30pm, about an hour into the chase, Barnstable Officer Patrick Fallon, K-9 Officers, and multi-agency personnel were still running after the suspect in the area of Founder’s Court toward the CVS at the intersection of Route 28 and Strawberry Hill Road.  Barnstable Sergeant Steve McGuire coordinated the manhunt from the location where the Honda Civic was finally stopped.  They were looking for a light-skinned black male with prominent sideburns, wearing jeans and blue pullover shirt.

At 12:30am all police units were clear from the scene.  Police have the possible identity for the third suspect and Hyannis News will withhold that information until police have concluded their investigation.

Hyannis News will provide updates to this story as they become available.
