NEW HAMPSHIRE - Under a new bill, state lawmakers will consider naming a portion of the Franconia Highway after slain Police Corporal Bruce McKay, although the fatal incident has been an ongoing source of controversy.  Opponents of the memorial have accused McKay of being a “bully cop.”  McKay was shot and killed by a 24-year-old man in May 2007.

.

Video of Franconia Police Corporal Bruce McKay being shot and killed before his shooter was killed has been released. Note: This is an unedited version that shows Liko Kenney firing his gun at McKay.

.

(NOTE: The time stamp is wrong, the shooting took place at about 6 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2007.)

.

While attempting to conduct a traffic stop the suspect, Liko Kenney, fled Cpl. McKay’s initial attempt.

.

McKay gave chase in his cruiser, caught Kenney about a mile and a half down the road and stopped his car in front of Kenney's car, forcing Kenney to stop. McKay then sprayed Kenney with OC spray, an irritant similar to pepper spray, and backed away from the vehicle as Kenney pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and shot McKay four times. As McKay stumbled across the road, bleeding, Kenney ran his vehicle over the dying officer.

.

A former Marine, Gregory W. Floyd, 49, who was driving with his son along Route 116 in Franconia saw Liko Kenney, 24, shoot Franconia Police Corporal Bruce McKay, 48, four times in the torso. Floyd rushed to the officer's aid as Kenney drove his Toyota Celica over McKay.  He grabbed Corporal McKay's gun, while his son called for help on Corporal McKay's radio. The civilian then ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. When the suspect refused, the civilian shot and killed the suspect.

.

The State Attorney General has decided the civilian's actions were justified and he will not face any charges.

.

Authorities said the double shooting was the bloody climax of a long-simmering feud between McKay, a 12-year-veteran of the three-member department, and Kenney, a cousin of World Cup champion skier Bode Miller.

The suspect had previously been convicted of assaulting Corporal McKay during a vehicle stop in 2003.

Corporal McKay is survived by his daughter, fiancee, parents, and sister.

.

WARNING: The end of this video shows fatal shots and may not be suitable for some viewers.  Footage does have sound near the end.  Video, which runs for 7 minutes, shows the entire traffic stop from start to finish.
