Drunk Drivers Locked Up YARMOUTH POLICE PRESS RELEASE: On Friday, January 18, 2008 at 1:13 AM—Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Christopher R. Marino observed a white van operating at a high rate of speed and in an erratic manner on Winslow Gray Road in West Yarmouth. Patrol Officer Marino further observed the vehicle repeatedly drive back and forth onto the marked yellow centerline and over marked white fog line.
Patrol Officer Marino stopped the vehicle and met with the operator who told him he had been drinking beer. Patrol Officer Marino—with back up assistance from fellow Patrol Officer Louis Nickinello—conducted a series of standardized field sobriety tests, which resulted in the arrest of Charles T. Merritt for drunken driving.
At 2:07 AM—Yarmouth Police Patrol Investigator Christopher A. Kent observed a blue pick up truck southbound on Higgins Crowell Road in West Yarmouth operating in an erratic manner as it repeatedly swerved back and forth over the yellow centerlines.
Patrol Investigator Kent stopped the vehicle and met with the operator. The operator exhibited signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking several beers. Patrol Investigator Kent—with back up support from fellow Patrol Officers Melissa Alden and Richard Fichter—conducted a series of standardized field sobriety tests, which resulted in the arrest of Carl J. Johnson for his third offense of drunken driving. A passenger in the vehicle was also intoxicated was placed under arrest when a computerized WMS check uncovered two outstanding warrants.
All three subjects were processed at Yarmouth Police Headquarters and are scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court this morning.
