HYANNIS – Those were the words an officer used to describe the nature of the injuries sustained by the victim of a brutal early morning attack.
At 1:10am this morning – Thursday – Barnstable Police initially dispatched E233 and E270 (an unmarked patrol unit) to the area of Spring and Center Streets to investigate a disturbance involving an “Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon,” after receiving a call from a passerby.
Barnstable Officers were quickly able to discern what had just occurred and why. An arrest was soon made and an ambulance was called the scene.
Barnstable Police Sergeant Sean Sweeny confirmed that a 16-year-old was quickly located hiding inside a nearby apartment on Center Street where he was taken into custody for Assault and Battery with Dangerous Weapon – a baseball bat.
According to Sweeney the 23-year-old victim had just received a telephone from the 16-year-old, accusing him of sleeping with his girlfriend. Shortly after the call, the victim then met with the teen face to face. Suddenly, two of the teen’s friends restrained the victim as the 16-year-old struck him in the face with a bat.
The victim was transported to Cape Cod Hospital, where Officer David Downs also summoned a Barnstable County Identification Officer to photograph the victim’s wounds, which included notable swelling, bruising, and bleeding.
The name of the 16-year-old is being withheld because he is considered a “juvenile.”
