HYANNIS- Firefighters swiftly knocked down a suspicious brush fire on conservation land today at approximately 4:30pm.
Hyannis Firefighters and Barnstable Patrolman David Hegarty are investigating the cause of today’s wayward blaze, which could have been much worse if the wind wasn’t in their favor. An easterly breeze kept the fire relatively close to the shoreline on Betty’s Pond.
Had the wind changed slightly firefighters would have been chasing the flames inland towards several nearby homes and apartments.
Firefighters and Police are looking into what or who set the fire, and Barnstable County Crime Scene Investigators were also summoned to take photos and bag evidence.
A neighbor to the conservation land explained his ongoing struggle with homeless individuals attempting to camp in the wooded area.
There is no evidence at this time to suggest that homeless individuals are responsible for today’s fire.
Hyannis News will publish additional information on this story as it becomes available.
