At approximately 5:05 PM this afternoon two, possibly three cars collided on West Yarmouth Road in West Yarmouth just north of Suffolk Ave. Exactly what happened was not immediately evident at the scene upon arrival of HyannisNews.

The cars involved were a silver Volvo and a silver Honda. There was a dark colored SUV also parked in the area but it was not immediately clear if that vehicle was involved in the collision.

It appeared that the Volvo was traveling in the direction of Buck Island Road while the Honda was traveling in the opposite direction. From the damage and the positions of the vehicles it would seem like the left front of the Volvo collided with the left rear of the Honda in the vicinity of the Honda’s rear wheel well.

Elderly Driver Assisted by Fire FighterThe impact tore the left front wheel and steering assembly completely from Volvo. The Wheel and A frame were found in the woods several feet behind the rear of the Volvo. The Volvo itself appears to have slid on its frame along the roadway for several feet and then went off the paved roadway eventually coming to a complete stop with the right front against a tree with additional extensive damage to the right front side of the vehicle.

Both airbags in the Volvo deployed and the elderly driver who seemed shaken and disoriented but otherwise unharmed was helped from the vehicle by firefighters and aided away from the vehicle using a walker. He was sitting in the driver’s seat of the Volvo when HyannisNews arrived within minutes of the accident being reported.

While the Volvo went head first into a tree, the Honda appears to have spun around and backed into another tree. When they came to a rest both cars faced the same direction about 100 – 200 feet apart from each other.  Yarmouth Paramedics removed a woman passenger from the Honda’s driver’s side. She was placed on a back board and transported.

The accident is being investigated by Yarmouth Patrol Officer Chris Capobianco.
