HYANNIS- At 12:24am a Town Taxi cab driver flagged down Sergeant Michael Clark of the Barnstable Police Department near Hiramar Road. The driver was worried about a female passenger he had picked up across town at 65 Spring Street.
The cabby went on to describe that the woman was bleeding profusely from the face while she wandered away on foot to an uncertain destination, and that she was in obvious need of medical attention.
Hyannis News was nearby when Sergeant Clark , along with other officers, conducted a search of the surrounding streets, specifically focusing on the area of Quaker Road.
After not finding the injured woman Sergeant Clark and another patrol officer returned to the area of 65 Spring Street to investigate what was already suspected to be a case of domestic violence.
At approximately 2:00am a Barnstable Patrolman was dispatched to the area of emergency room number 20 inside the Cape Cod Hospital after a nurse became suspicious regarding a woman in her mid-thirties presenting with serious facial injuries.
Upon arrival the Patrolman immediately called a supervisor to the hospital for what was turning into a domestic violence case with extreme injury. A Barnstable County Identification Officer was also called to the hospital to take photos; the CIO happened to be tied up investigating a separate case in Bourne and Barnstable Officers continued to investigate while awaiting his arrival.
The woman’s right eye was struck so hard it was swollen shut and the crime scene was reportedly a bloody one.
Yarmouth Police were notified regarding a particular suspect and were also advised that investigators had enough probable cause to enable them to effect an arrest.
Police eventually caught up to and arrested Lawrence M. Baker, age 37, at the Econo Lodge located on Route 28 in West Yarmouth. Baker is also listed as a resident of West Yarmouth.
Baker was charged with Assault and Battery Domestic Violence, along with Felony Assault and Battery with Intent to Commit Serious Bodily Injury.
