Update, 4/8/07 - 6:00pm: Barnstable Police Sergeant Ben Baxter confirmed that there were indeed 3 stabbing victims in last night's incident outside of the Pufferbellies nightclub.  The extent of the injuries could have been much worse, but fortunately all three victims were treated and later released from Cape Cod Hospital.

The entire incident is still under investigation and Hyannis News will bring you updates as they become available.

HYANNIS EAST END- 4/8/07- Things were relatively quiet up until the 1:00am breakup, especially for a night that had police concerned due the large number of people out celebrating at many of the local nightclubs and bars.

Parking lots surrounding Pufferbellies were filled more than usual early this morning, and people were leaving the area peacefully up until when a Barnstable Patrolman came across a brawl about a hundred yards away from the main entrance to the popular night spot.

Hyannis News arrived on scene moments after Patrolman Troy Perry requested rescue to the scene for a victim with a stab wound.  That’s when all available Hyannis patrol cars converged on the area to assist.  One witness said he was just standing there when someone punched him in the lip.  Police had their hands full breaking up the brawl and getting people to leave the area.

Not long after the first stabbing, police were rushing back to the entrance of Pufferbellies for a report of a second stabbing.

Police also had another heated situation developing at the Cape Cod Hospital Emergency Room where friends of the victims along with others involved in the fight began to arrive and argue back and forth.  Barnstable Police dispatched additional units from outside of Hyannis to the Hospital in order to keep the peace.

It seemed as if the original altercation simply moved a few blocks east to the hospital as police patiently broke up frays between young men throwing punches and racial remarks at each other inside the emergency waiting room.  At least two had to be taken into custody in order to prevent things from getting out of hand.  Barnstable Police and Hospital Security patiently reached out to the crowd, and using cool headed conversation they tactfully managed to talk people down.

After things were calm Hyannis News was able to talk with those involved and learned that prior to the fight tonight’s event at the club was in honor of a local friend of many who tragically and suddenly passed away earlier this week in a separate incident on Alden Way in Hyannis.  (You may find this April 3, 2007 story entitled “Tragedy at Alden Way” on the front page under Latest News)

Originally, one Barnstable Police Official had the number of stabbing victims at three.  Hyannis News was able to confirm that there were at least two victims that were going to be treated and released this morning.

One of the victims (whose name we will withhold due to the ongoing investigation) met with Hyannis News after being released from the hospital this morning.  He felt fortunate to be alive and said things all happened very fast.  Apparently, someone grabbed him from behind and he thought it was someone breaking things up.  It wasn’t until he saw all the blood that he realized he had been stabbed multiple times in the arm, underarm, and back.  Luckily for him, none of the wounds were deep enough to cause complications.  He expressed concern over possible out-of-town influences using desperate fighting tactics that youths from the Hyannis area simply do not expect.  For example, fights today often escalate to a point where third parties jump-in using weapons.  He seemed interested in stopping future violence before someone loses a life.
