HYANNIS WEST END- Barnstable Police and Hyannis Firefighters once again needed to respond to the wooded area behind the town owned “Open Space” across the street from the old Hyport Brewing Company.

A local resident notified authorities that he could smell burning in the woods adjacent to many homes along Dumont Drive.  The caller also believed that homeless persons were in the area partaking in illegal activities.

Police responded and Officer Matthew Lounsbury took two individuals into custody.  One of the men will likely be charged with drinking in public (Open Container) and Resisting Arrest.

Fire Fighters equipped with extinguishers had to search the entire wooded area to ensure that there were not any fires left unattended.  (Conditions at the time were rainy and not conducive to brush fires, but officials were not taking any chances)

Aside: In recent months firefighters had to deal with several suspicious brush fires close to residential neighborhoods, some of which are believed to have been caused by vagrants.
