One week ago, at 7:50 AM - on Thursday April 27th, HyannisNews ventured out into an intense wind driven rain storm to cover a terrible crash on the westbound side of Route 6 in Barnstable.

We found the accident just one mile east of Exit 6 - the Route 132, Hyannis - West Barnstable exit. While driving to the scene, fighting the wind, the rain, and pools of standing water everywhere on Yarmouth Road it was easy to imagine how an accident could happen under such adverse conditions on the Mid-Cape Highway that morning.

We had already received reports that the crash was a bad one. But even with that knowledge, upon actually seeing what was left of the silver Toyota Corolla, we feared the worst for the female driver who was trapped in the vehicle. We found it difficult to imagine how she could possibly survive. In all, she was trapped for about an hour in cold, hard driving, rain while over a dozen rescue personnel attended to her medical needs and worked feverishly to free her from the mangled wreck that was once her car.

We are pleased to inform our readers that a woman who identified herself as Corinne Ceravone of West Dennis phoned 508-775-NEWS at about 6:00 PM this evening to tell us that she was indeed the victim of that crash and thanked us for our coverage of the accident and she hoped that we would tell all her friends and our readers that she was now OK. The photo above, taken immediately after Corrine was extricated from her vehicle shows the drivers seat and the expended airbag which surely contributed to her survival.

She was thankful to all the emergency personnel that helped her at the scene, especially the good Samaritan whom State Police identified as Peter Stevens of Harwich who stayed with her and comforted her the whole time she was trapped.

Corrine told us she was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital by ambulance because the weather was so bad a Medevac Helicopter could not fly. We were in the hospital for 4 days being treated for the injuries sustained in the crash. These injuries included 2 broken legs – her left femur and her right fibula, and some torn ligaments.  Fortunately, she is now recovering at home with her family.

We want to thank Corrine for her thoughtfulness by calling us. We appreciate knowing that she is OK as we have thought of her often since that morning. We were also pleased to learn that she is now a HyannisNews regular reader and that she has been telling all her friends about us. Thank you Corrine from all of us at HyannisNews. We hope you continue to have a speedy recovery.
