SOUTH YARMOUTH - Only moments after the Midnight Shift hit the streets a report came into the Yarmouth Police Department that All Terrain Vehicles or Four Wheelers were seen and/or heard racing around the athletic fields at Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School. The reported activity seemed to be in the area of the football field.

Several cruisers responded and as they arrived at the scene, the 4 wheelers attempted to hide over by the tennis courts and turned their lights off. As patrol officers moved in that direction, one 4 wheeler was spotted racing down Regional Avenue without lights and was last seen in the vicinity of the lights at North Main and Sheridan.

A short time later another Patrol Officer spotted a 4 Wheeler headed North on Station Avenue and he pursued the 4 Wheeler at speeds up to 55 MPH as far as the railroad tracks. This 4 Wheeler was also without lights and was last seen running east toward North Dennis along the railroad tracks. At this point the chase was called off for safety reasons.

Yarmouth Police continue to investigate.

UPDATE FROM YPD MEDIA RELEASE:

On Friday, May 04, 2007 at 12:15 AM—the Yarmouth Police Department responded to a report of two All Terrain Vehicles on the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Football field causing damage.

Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers Andrew O’Malley—Melissa Alden—Olivier Naas—and David Schneeweis responded to the area and spotted one of the two vehicles parked in the tennis court area parking lot on Regional Avenue with its engine and lights off. As Patrol Officer O’Malley and his partner Alden approached—the suspect immediately started the vehicle and fled towards Station Avenue.

Patrol Officer O’Malley activated his cruiser emergency lights and siren and attempted to stop the vehicle.  The vehicle did not stop and continued to flee northbound on Station Avenue at a speed of 40-55 miles per hour.  The officers lost sight of the vehicle, as it turned east on to the former railroad tracks adjacent to White Path.  Despite a saturation patrol of the area—the suspects or ATVs were not found.

The football field and the athletic track suffered moderate to extensive damage.  The Yarmouth Police Department and the Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District is seeking the public’s assistance in trying to solve this crime.  Anyone with information is urged to contact the Yarmouth Police Department at 508-775-0445.

Update provided by Lt. Stephen G. Xiarhos of the Yarmouth  Police Department.
