6/11/07 UPDATE: According to a Barnstable Police Department Press Release an on scene investigation revealed William Sanford, age 18, of Centerville, MA, suffered a single gunshot wound to his shoulder area while visiting the residence.  Joseph M. Cannistraro, age 17, of 67 Timber Lane, Marstons Mills, was reportedly "fooling around" with a .38 caliber handgun... he thought the gun was not loaded... the handgun discharged a single round striking Sanford.

The C.O.M.M. rescue squad transported Sanford to Cape Cod Hospital ER with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Neither Sanford nor Cannistraro have a valid License to Carry a Firearm.

Following the shooting, Cannistraro reportedly threw the handgun into the family's swimming pool.  The handgun was recovered with the assistance of C.O.M.M. F.D..

Cannistraro was arrested and charged with the following:

1. Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling

2. Illegal Possession of a Firearm

3. Unlawful Possession of Ammunition

The Barnstable Police Detective Division is conducting an investigation into the origins of the handgun and how Cannistraro came into possession of it.

MARSTONS MILLS- Just before 8:00pm Barnstable Police rushed to 67 Timber Lane for a report that a seventeen year old male had been shot, possibly by accident.

Dispatch also told responding police officers that the father of one of the boys was also in route to the home.

Officers were told that the young man who fired the gun was going to meet them out in front of the residence.  He reportedly told dispatchers that the gun was out back by the pool.

First police officers secured the scene and radioed that it was now safe to “roll rescue” that had been staging nearby.

The 17 year old boy was rolled out on a stretcher and lifted up and into a C.O.M.M. rescue unit.  The boy was transported to Cape Cod Hospital.

Investigators arrived and set up police tape.  Barnstable Sergeant Ben Baxter was the highest ranking officer present, he immediately confirmed with dispatch the Barnstable County Identification Officers were also in route.

The boy who allegedly fired the weapon was transported back to the Barnstable Police Facility by Patrol Officer Roxanne Robbins.  It is still uncertain whether he was under arrest.

The condition of the victim is still uncertain and Hyannis News will provide updates as they become available.
