YARMOUTH - Wednesday night proved to be a test of endurance and resources for the Yarmouth Police Department on Wednesday's 4:00 PM to Midnight shift but they met the challenge. Officers were kept busy responding to multiple serious calls for several hours.

Among the situations officers were called upon to deal with in a short time, were an OUI resulting in a vehicle crashing into the woods, a domestic assault and battery, a drug bust at a West Yarmouth Motel, an Armed Robbery at the Town and Country Motor Lodge (See separate story about the Armed Robbery) , a noise complaint off Standish Way, and the shift was topped off by a large number of people reported to be staying at the Thunderbird Motel in violation of being closed down by the town as being unfit for human habitation.

A staff member from the Thunderbird spoke to HyannisNews and said the the people who were staying there on Wednesday evening were all people working on the motel making repairs to restore it back to a condition whereby it could pass inspection and reopen. Apparently, there were several violations of various town building codes for plumbing, electrical, and other conditions rendering unfit for habitation.

Shift Supervisor Sergeant Frank Hennessey responded to the scene just before midnight. After speaking with the staff and some of the inhabitants at the closed motel about the laws and regulations, he was gracious enough to speak briefly with HyannisNews about the situation.

He was sympathetic to the unfortunate situation faced by the people staying there and the plight of many owners and operators of older motels along Route 28 that have a hard time competing with newer more modern facilities. He explained that they are caught in a Catch 22 situation whereby they need to make repairs to comply with the codes, but to do so, they need to rent rooms. But they can't rent the rooms until they can pass inspection. It is a vicious cycle that is hard for them to break out of.

One admitted that they were caught up in a desperate situation. In the past few weeks police have needed to respond to the motel for domestic and other disturbances.

Shortly before 1:00 AM,  it seemed like all was wrapped up at the motel peacefully and officers were clearing the scene.
