HYANNIS- 10:00pm- The customary Saturday night face-off between members of the Victory Chapel exercising their right to Freedom of Speech and the sidewalk patrons of Schooners Restaurant multitasking with their own palates, deteriorated into an irreverent spectacle which warranted a police presence.

Twenty years ago the Town of Barnstable had a rarely enforced Anti-Profanity Bylaw (they may still…).  Many questioned the constitutionality of that law then; police used other less contended laws to keep the peace… But tonight reached troubling levels of disrespect and belligerent language, which left you wondering which group was the most annoying, the religious group preaching "Jesus" across Main Street at diners, or the vocal diners (mostly locals) who came out to Schooners to argue and heckle back!

When Hyannis News arrived, a young man was standing in the middle of Main Street making obscene hand gestures at the singing and clapping Chapel members.

Victory Chapel members took turns preaching towards Schooners about salvation.  While one patron sitting at Schooners shouted back “Shut the f--- up!”

Someone else in the crowd kept purposefully setting off their truck’s car alarm, horn blaring, lights flashing...

Some hecklers used profanity and vulgarities, yet others simply tried to engage in a shouting match, seemingly debating religion.

One woman called the Victory Chapel a “cult.”  Moments later a Hyannis man stood and pretended to point a rifle at Victory Chapel members.

“I use to steal things,” professed one young black man who claimed to have been “saved.”

“You still do,” drew laughter from one group of diners.

  • Religious matters as with opinions should only be spoken or said to someone or those wlling to lend an ear. By screaqming your belifs in public (schooners) is only making people like the man mocking you, more angry with religion and it justifies the falsisms that suround it. Phil Wallace is the local man in the video, some may call him a wealthy trust fund drunk but others know that he like many others is easily provoked into these random acts of violence and senseless acts of humor. Please all I urge you to do is THINK by shouting at anyone going to change the disgust behind your church? And I ask that if you must insist can you do it at around 1:00am when the local bars close so that maybe more sensible acts maybe taken to dismantle these ludities that abound.

  • btw, contact the irs (see ch. 501(c)(3); file form 4959A) as to whether this is, in fact, a 'religious' organization. For some reason (o;), no one is allowed to check their books. also, why does this 'mafia' mob ritually and repetitively block and scream on public ways that 'we' are sinners and must 'tithe' to paul campos and 'the door' franchise? walk the same, talk the same. not brainwashable. you?

  • donovanatee,joepublic,Jack,JC,stungunorkazoo-all of your comments and information are correct and on point re the Potter's House (aka, The Door, Victory Chapel) 'franchise' in Hyannis. See the doj's criminal 'civil rights' violations; as well as 42 U.S.C. sec. 2000a; and also NY statutory law re intimidation and coercion of civilians.

  • LOL… however, if you were any good at the playing the kazoo the police could possibly get you on a town bylaw for not having an entertainment permit… :)

  • maybe my kazoo will not qualify as noise violation v. boombox? however, may incite a riot. o : )
