HYANNIS- 10:00pm- The customary Saturday night face-off between members of the Victory Chapel exercising their right to Freedom of Speech and the sidewalk patrons of Schooners Restaurant multitasking with their own palates, deteriorated into an irreverent spectacle which warranted a police presence.
Twenty years ago the Town of Barnstable had a rarely enforced Anti-Profanity Bylaw (they may still…). Many questioned the constitutionality of that law then; police used other less contended laws to keep the peace… But tonight reached troubling levels of disrespect and belligerent language, which left you wondering which group was the most annoying, the religious group preaching "Jesus" across Main Street at diners, or the vocal diners (mostly locals) who came out to Schooners to argue and heckle back!
When Hyannis News arrived, a young man was standing in the middle of Main Street making obscene hand gestures at the singing and clapping Chapel members.
Victory Chapel members took turns preaching towards Schooners about salvation. While one patron sitting at Schooners shouted back “Shut the f--- up!”
Someone else in the crowd kept purposefully setting off their truck’s car alarm, horn blaring, lights flashing...
Some hecklers used profanity and vulgarities, yet others simply tried to engage in a shouting match, seemingly debating religion.
One woman called the Victory Chapel a “cult.” Moments later a Hyannis man stood and pretended to point a rifle at Victory Chapel members.
“I use to steal things,” professed one young black man who claimed to have been “saved.”
“You still do,” drew laughter from one group of diners.
