UPDATE: Hyannis News just spoke with the mother of one of the three local boy heroes responsible for saving Andi Carole’s building by calling in the fire before it got out of hand. The mother was very proud of her son for making the selfless decision to call 911. All three boys were having fun at a sleepover when they, being young adolescents, made the risky decision to sneak out for a late night stroll, it was 3:00am. When the boys saw flames inside Andi’s dress shop they knew they’d get bagged for sneaking out, but all decided to go ahead anyway and do the RIGHT thing. The mom told Hyannis News that it was difficult to ground her son for being a hero, but rules are rules… she was both angry with and proud of her son, the life of concerned parent. When a police officer showed up at her door with her son early Saturday morning, she listened to the story about sneaking out... she also heard the officer tell of the boy's heroic deed... She then did what every loving mother would do, she grounded him! It, like her son's call to 911, was a difficult decision, but it was the RIGHT decision!

HYANNIS- At approximately 3:00am Saturday morning 3 youths (approximately age 13) were having a sleepover and snuck “out for a walk.” As they were walking past number 20 Sea Street they noticed flames inside the building. Their phone call to 911 may have saved the entire building. (According to the boys they will likely get grounded for sneaking out, but if they hadn’t the fire could have been much worse.)
Hyannis News arrived just as firefighters were preparing to enter the smoke filled building (See footage below). Hyannis firefighters needed to smash panes of glass on the front entrance. They entered with at least one hose, moving to the rear of the building.
Meanwhile, officials were on the outside north wall of the building dealing with and inspecting the possible source of the fire.
Although firefighters were able to knock down the fire relatively quickly, the contents of the shop were likely permanently ruined due to exposure to the thick smoke.
Barnstable Police were on scene and blocked the road from Main to South Street.
Barnstable Police Identification Officer Jack Corbett was summoned to take photos of both the inside and the outside north wall of the building.
Barnstable Police Detective John York was also called to the scene. Detective York is specially trained in the investigation of fires. In a brief interview with Hyannis News he said that they are currently ruling out the possibility of foul play. According to Detective York, the fire started outside the building in some bark mulch. It’s likely the mulch had been smoldering for quite a while before making its way up under the siding and into the building. Hyannis News learned that there was some fire damage inside, but most of the damage was caused by smoke.
When the owner, Andi Carole, arrived on scene she was visibly shaken and upset. Over the past several years she has dedicated herself to the restoration and improvement of the entire building at 20 Sea Street.
Number 20 Sea Street was formally known as the West End Food Market. When Andi Carol moved from Main Street across from the town green to Sea Street, the building at number 20 needed and received a complete makeover.
Andi Carole has been in business in the Hyannis area for at least twenty years. She’s a former fashion model and she personally designs her own line of clothing. She has been in the fashion industry for most of her life.
At 4:45am most fire and police units were clear of the scene.

FOOTNOTE: Just before 6:00am Hyannis News had an opportunity to speak with Andi Carole while she was busy cleaning up the mess. Andi is one of those shop owners who won’t let a tragedy like this keep her down. In a season where foreclosures and bankruptcy claims are at record highs, many local merchants are feeling the stress resulting from what amounts to a slow tourist season. Andi did mention that her insurance will cover some of the damage… but insurance will not take into account the full value of her personally designed merchandise heading into one of the busiest weeks of the season. When Hyannis News spoke with Andi, she was already sweeping up shards of glass and making her store front look presentable. But it is unlikely her shop will be open to the public any time very soon- Andi, however, seemed to be up to the challenge, hoping it would be sooner than later. Work needs to be done inside and then there’s the question of what to do about the smoke damage. But longtime merchants like Andi are a credit to entire downtown environment and many are hoping she’ll bounce back and come back stronger than ever. (Personally knowing Andi for nearly 20 years, I have little doubt in her tenacity and I fully believe she’ll make things happen!)
