HYANNIS - This afternoon the family of Julia Blackhawk, age 32 who was tragically killed in the catastrophic collapse of a bridge over the Mississippi River in Minnesota last week, agreed to talk to the media at Calvary Baptist Church in Hyannis.
Valerie Redanz and the sons of Julia Blackhawk, Adaaro, 12, and Xavier, 8, meet with representatives of the news media immediately after church services today. Valerie Redanz is the grandmother of the children and they are now living with her. The press conference took place inside the church at the family's request.
Julia Blackhawk was attending cosmetology school in order to make a better life for her and her family the grandmother told the press. "She was a loving mother who wanted nothing more that to be a good parent to her children." Valerie Redanz brought her grandsons to her church at 7:30 Friday morning, where they met with her pastor, the pastor’s wife and a counselor. There she told the boys of their mother’s death. Understandably, the boys were devastated. Redanz says she received legal guardianship of Adaaro and Xavier on Friday and plans to adopt the boys.
Those wishing to help this loving, struggling family may donate to a memorial fund set up in her honor. The fund has been established at: South Metro Federal Credit Union, 15045 Mystic Lake Drive, Prior Lake, MN 55372. Julia Blackhawk was proud member of the Winnebago Nation.
