PHOTOS: Lost baby dolphin near Kennedy Compound…
HYANNIS PORT – At about 12 noon on yesterday, HN received an urgent email from a reliable confidential source that there was some type of “dolphin stranding” at Eugenia Fortes Beach…
… unfortunately for me, and the readers, I don’t usually begin to wake up until about 2pm at the earliest…
But rest assured, by 3pm I had a large coffee, two boiled eggs, and a bowl of oatmeal in me as I sprung into action and hit the ground running.
When I arrived at Eugenia Fortes Beach, the one right next to the Hyannis Port Yacht Club and the Kennedy Compound, the seagulls gave me a look which said, ‘where the [bleep] were you?’
HN had blown it. No photos… no story… and even my 11-year-old rescued mutt riding along in the back seat seemed disappointed. It wasn’t a great start to the day. I called friends to commiserate…
… and that’s when the magic happened.
I received word a facebook friend had captured photos of the “lost baby dolphin!” Apparently the young dolphin had entered the Hyannis Port waters and seemed to be either lost or trapped.
The photos on this page were taken by Autumn Cardello and she informed Hyannis News the baby dolphin at first kept swimming back and forth in front of her…
Autumn also said the dolphin was still there swimming around when she left the beach. The IFAW Marine Mammal Rescue team had arrived and they told her they were going to just watch him for now to make sure he didn’t beach himself. If he did beach, they planned on checking him to see if there was something wrong with him. After speaking with the rescue team, Autumn felt safe leaving the beach knowing the baby dolphin was in good hands and that they would take care of him.
Hyannis News attempted to call IFAW early this morning to check on the dolphin’s status but it was too early and nobody was in the office.
HN will provide updates as they become available.
