PRESS RELEASE by Captain William M. Monahan, Dennis Police

At approximately 6:45 am Tuesday morning August 21, 2007 Dennis Police responded to several 9-1-1 calls reporting a pedestrian vs. motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Lower Count rd. and Trotting Park Rd. in West Dennis.

Upon arrival at the scene officers discovered the pedestrian (deceased) lying at the rear of a 1999 Mercury Sable 4dr. sedan, which had struck him and then crashed into a hydrant and utility pole, on the north side of Lower County Rd.

The hydrant had ruptured, as a result of the crash, and was spewing a large volume of water, resulting in the creation of a twelve (12) foot wide sink hole that grew to a depth of about six (6) feet, into which the vehicle began to disappear.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the pedestrian was walking along the north side of Lower County Rd. when he was struck by the Mercury Sable which was operating eastbound on Lower County Rd..

The driver of the vehicle is identified as 42 year old Todd Jenkins of Dennisport.  He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Dennis Fire Rescue where he was treated and released later in the morning.

No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is continuing with the assistance of Dennis Police Accident Reconstruction personnel.

The pedestrian is identified as Albert Alissi, 77 years of age of Weatogue, Ct.

Mr. Alissi was staying in a nearby summer home which he owns with his wife Sarah.

The roadway will remain shut down to through traffic, while utility crews work to replace the hydrant and utility pole and clean sand and debris from the roadway.

Mr. Alissi was removed from the scene and taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Boston for examination.
