HYANNIS – Two “homeless” men seen running from the wooded area behind Bank of America on Main Street, spooked by a passing ambulance siren. “What in the world were these grown men up to?” must have haunted the curious mind of an accidental eyewitness, a lucky thing for local residents.
Moments later, shortly after 3pm, Barnstable Police received a call and dispatched Patrolman Dan Ruth to investigate an unattended fire.
Familiar with the active “homeless campsite” just over the wall to the rear of the “open space/ park” across the street from the dilapidated old “HyPort Brewing Co.,” Officer Ruth knew exactly where to look.
Hyannis FD was immediately summoned to deal with a relatively large unattended “Campfire.”
A thriving fire, fueled by unusually high wind gusts, located just yards away from family homes, in a thickly wooded area, was an averted disaster thanks to a timely phone call from an unidentified passing good Samaritan.
Remaining soaked charred wood, surrounded by empty booze and mouthwash bottles, a downtown “campsite” for the “homeless,” and just one more nuisance first responders now need to baby-sit on a regular basis due to ongoing "profiles in stupidity."
