YARMOUTH – Today’s “Operation Un-Gun” was a tremendous success. Perhaps more so than police originally bargained for!
Initially everything was going as planned, with Yarmouth Police Officers taking custody and control of unwanted firearms and ammunition.
Everything was going as planned that is until someone transported two live military projectiles to the parking area of police headquarters. A local citizen originally had them in his home. The two live military projectiles drew immediate concern which prompted Yarmouth Police to call for assistance from the Massachusetts State Police of the State Fire Marshal. The Yarmouth Fire Department was also summoned just in case as State police safely took custody of the items.
A WORD OF CAUTION: Should you have live military projectiles or explosives in your home, or believe that your projectiles may be live, DO NOT transport them ANYWHERE under ANY circumstances. Military projectiles, especially the older ones, may become unstable if handled or even slightly moved, endangering lives and at the very least disturbing the peace by causing alarm. If you find yourself in possession of any explosive device (which is more common than many would believe), it is safer for everyone if you DO NOT touch it and notify your local or state police.
All in all, Yarmouth Police managed to seize 32 unwanted firearms and several thousand rounds of assorted ammunition.
The Yarmouth Police Department would like to remind everyone that “Operation Un-Gun” is ongoing and any unwanted firearms or ammunition can be collected by calling 508-775-0445 and having an officer come to their residence to safely recover the items.
