WEST BARNSTABLE- The first Officer on the scene alertly asked for rescue to “step it up…”  Every second counts when first responders need to save a life, and that’s exactly the type of situation rescue workers faced early this morning just North of the intersection of Race Lane and Osterville West Barnstable Road, near the Barnstable Sheriff’s Youth Ranch...

At 12:52am Barnstable Police dispatched the first of many cruisers to a one car accident reported by a Good Samaritan/ passerby.  The unknown Samaritan advised Dispatch that he would standby with the victim until help arrived.

Details are still sketchy prior to investigation results, but the vehicle appeared to heading South on Osterville West Barnstable Road when it somehow spun and sideswiped a tree.

The victim was a young male who sustained “multiple injuries,” according to Captain Philip Field of the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department.  The identity of victim is still unknown at this early account, but an on-sight observer did mention witnessing that the victim was wearing a Barnstable High School jacket.  Rescue workers carefully extracted the victim using the “Jaws of Life” while removing the vehicle’s roof.

Minutes after the arrival of rescue workers, a police supervisor directed a cruiser to take a position at the Marstons Mills Airfield and illuminate an area to alert a Med-Flight helicopter.  About an hour after the initial call, a helicopter touched down, and the young victim was stable enough to be airlifted.  According to experts, Med-Flights will not transport until a victim is breathing on his own.

Rescue workers took great care in securing the victim for what was reportedly a successful airlift.

Back at the crash scene Barnstable Police Accident Reconstruction Expert Patrolman Neil Gearin was summoned, where he and others began an intensive investigation.  “Drag Tests,” and other factors were considered to determine speed, direction, and pertinent circumstances.

A couple of out-of-town news personnel were on scene and were cautioned about getting too close and interfering with the integrity of the scene.  One photographer was politely warned about his choice for parking spaces as Officers dutifully took control.

Hyannis News wishes to take this opportunity to advise all reporters, especially those from remote Cape areas, that the Barnstable Police Department has a highly trained Accident Reconstruction Team that carefully considers all evidence on scene.  Reporters can easily contaminate a scene without knowing, please be cautious, ask permission before approaching!

Hyannis News recognizes the professionalism of Barnstable’s well trained First Responders, and proudly commends them on this morning’s urgent rescue efforts in what was obviously a very tragic event.
