HYANNIS- At 12:26am Barnstable Police responded to a stabbing at 39 Hiramar Road.  The first officer on scene radioed dispatch to “have rescue step it up.”

According to a Barnstable Police representative, two cousins were talking when the conversation took a turn for the worse, with one man plunging a knife into the other’s chest.

Police arrived and found the victim slumped down in a chair outside of the residence.  The first officers on scene were primarily concerned about the victim’s survival as Hyannis Rescue workers rushed him to Cape Cod Hospital.

The initial investigation was complicated due to a language barrier between officers and witnesses.  With broken English, Spanish, and gestures police were brought to a nearby residence several houses away on Hiramar Road where they arrested a suspect.

According to police radio transmissions, the arrested suspect is a Hispanic male, age 43, 5’5” tall.  (Hyannis News has the suspect’s name and will release it along with the charges as that information is confirmed by officials.)

The scene was immediately taped off and a county Crime Scene Investigator took photos, documented and bagged all potential evidence.  The victim's clothing was also secured.

Afternoon Update: According to Sergeant Sean Sweeny of the Barnstable Police, Santiago Alavardo, age 43, of 31 Hiramar Road was charged with the stabbing of his cousin Santos Arriaga, age 41.

Alavardo faces the following charges:

1.       Assault and Battery Domestic Violence

2.       Assault and Battery with Intent to Murder

3.       Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon

According Cape Cod Hospital spokesman David Reilly, Santos Arriaga, is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, but is currently listed in “Stable” condition.
