YARMOUTH- On Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 3:00 PM Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Richard Fichter, Jr. observed a black 1998 Ford Expedition southbound on Station Avenue swerve over the centerline and nearly strike an oncoming vehicle head on.

Patrol Officer Fichter attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle but the vehicle did not stop and continued on to Route 6 eastbound.  Patrol Officer Fichter continued to follow the vehicle with all cruiser emergency lights and sirens activated as the vehicle traveled at a speed of 45-55 miles per hour. After traveling the length of 1.5 miles the vehicle pulled over to the breakdown lane and stopped.

Patrol Officer Fichter—with the assistance of back up Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Philip Magnuson—conducted a high-risk stop of the vehicle and placed the lone occupant under arrest. Sergeant Paul Roderick of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the stop and conducted a check of the vehicle with his trained drug dog.  During the check the dog located a backpack in the vehicle which contained drug related paraphernalia as well as several individually packaged stacks of cash.

The suspect was transported to Yarmouth Police Headquarters and is scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court this morning. The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Yarmouth Police Detective Charles E. Peterson at 508-775-0445 extension 125.
