At approximately 4:00 AM, Yarmouth Police received a call that a motor vehicle had crashed into a utility pole near 61 Monroe Lane in West Yarmouth. Upon arriving at the scene Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers found that a silver 4-door sedan had struck the utility pole impacting on the driver’s side of the vehicle. It was determined that the vehicle involved in the crash was earlier reported stolen. The occupants of the vehicle had fled the scene of the accident before police arrived. The suspect vehicle was extensively damaged on the drivers side and sitting broadside in the travel lane of Monroe Lane when HyannisNews arrived on the scene. Both passenger side doors were smashed in and the rear door was nearly ripped from the vehicle.
The force of the crash was so intense that the utility pole was snapped in the middle, and a telephone utility box was also extensively damaged. Vehicles parked in driveways in the immediate area also received minor damage from flying debris.
Electrical power was interrupted in the immediate area and NStar and Verizon were called in to repair damage and restore service to the area.
The damaged vehicle was transported to the Yarmouth Police Headquarters on a flat bed wrecker. Yarmouth Police are following up multiple leads and interviewing potential witnesses, but are unable to release more details at this time except to say that they don't know how many people were in the vehicle or if the occupants were injured or not.
