CENTERVILLE- A Mashpee man was arrested today during a felony stop at 1:31pm after a brief search.

Hyannis News has learned that a Centerville resident in a S.U.V. was driving along Route 28 when he came into contact with a man on a 2003 gray Suzuki motorcycle who displayed a handgun.

Details as to what actually transpired between both men are still forthcoming, but the man in the S.U.V. called police reporting that a male biker with long braided hair, wearing a silver and red helmet, had just assaulted him by flashing a handgun, and that the weapon was returned to the front pocket of his black motorcycle jacket.  The man on the motorcycle was last seen driving west on Route 28 towards Mashpee when the victim in the S.U.V. turned off in the area of Lumbert Mill Road.

A motorcycle registration plate number was also given out to all responding police units.  The actual registered address came back to an individual on Nautical Way in Hyannis.  But the registered owner turned out not to be the man operating the bike.

Mashpee Police were notified of the situation and dispatched officers to assist.

A Barnstable unit stopped the biker in front of the Santuit Inn on Route 28 just before the Mashpee line.  A Mashpee unit backed him up as he detained the man.

The victim who reported the crime cautiously drove to the scene of the stop and positively identified the suspect as the man with the gun.

Sherwin C. Russell, age 32, of 20 Holly Way in Mashpee is being charged with Assault by means of a Dangerous Weapon according to a Barnstable Police representative.  The man apparently has a long criminal history which includes drug charges and unarmed robbery.  He had previously resided on Nautical Way in Hyannis.

Up to now the weapon has not yet been found by police.  The man had plenty of time to hand off, hide, or throw away the weapon.

Hyannis News will provide updates on this story as they become available.
