OSTERVILLE- Moments after receiving the report of a man with a gun the sky burst opened with buckets of rain and a brilliant flash of lightening- Barnstable cruisers had just arrived on the scene.

At approximately 1:30am an alert store clerk had just been closing up when his fiancé noticed that the man pulling and shaking the doors had a black gun in his hand.  The man’s face was partially covered with a blue bandana, he was wearing an orange/red jacket, and was intent on robbing the White Hen Pantry on Route 28.

The doors to the store had just been locked, but the lone gunman could have easily broken in through the glass.  The clerk and his alert friends quickly locked themselves inside the bathroom and called police on a cell phone.  It was this swift reaction to get safe, and then call the police, that prevented a potentially lethal situation.

Peter Brandeo, the store clerk, told Hyannis News that he’s studying to be a police officer and he certainly reacted bravely this morning.  His fiancé who happens to be six months pregnant was level-headed as she was able to let the others know instantly about the shocking encounter.  Peter’s friend, Damien Dan, also reacted heroically as all three quickly determined what was about to happen, later providing police with valuable details.

“Crazy stuff happens here… but nothing has ever hit me like this!” said Brandeo who seemed very relieved that everyone was safe.

About 6 Barnstable units and at least one Massachusetts State Trooper quickly arrived and searched for the suspect who fled the scene.  Vehicle stops were conducted on anyone suspicious.
