Woman Pinned in Car Crash on Route 6 Barnstable

At 7:50 AM this morning Dennis Police Chief Mike Whalen reported called State Police to report that there was a serious car crash on the west bound lane of Route 6, In Barnstable. The accident was exactly at the 1 mile sign alerting drivers of the 132 Exit. There was heavy rain in the area at the time.

A silver Toyota Corolla left the highway and impacted a tree in a major accident. The car was virtually destroyed in the crash. The car was operated by a woman who was to sole occupant of the vehicle. She was trapped in the vehicle for about one hour.

Barnstable File Rescue worked for about one hour in heavy rain to try to extract the victim from the vehicle. They were eventually able to free her and at 9:15 AM the Barnstable Fire Rescue ambulance transported the injured driver to Cape Cod Hospital. She appeared to be conscious when she was placed on the stretcher.

Rescuers Work to Free VictimsState Police officials told HyannisNews that a good samaritan whom they identified as Peter Stevens of Harwich either saw the accident happen or came along shortly thereafter and stayed with the victim and comforted her the whole time she was trapped.

In a follow up call to the South Yarmouth Barracks State Police declined to name the victim in the crash.  The accident is being investigated by State Trooper Casamassima assigned to the South Yarmouth Barracks. Trooper Reilly assisted at the scene..
