HYANNIS- At approximately 11:00pm Tuesday Night Officer John Campbell and his drug sniffing dog Rocky initiated at traffic stop on Winter Street (story origionally posted at 1:55am this morning).

MIDDAY UPDATE (5/16/07):  Hyannis News just spoke with Sgt. Sean Sweeney, and first of all we confirmed again that both Officers Cambell and Roycroft are well and able after the assaults, not having sustained serious injuries; both officers were able to return to patrol shortly after the incident.     The suspect who allegedly assaulted both officers has been identified as Julian Green, age 18, who professes to be from an address out of Boston, yet he's no stranger to local officers.     He has been charged with 2 counts of Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Breaking and Entering into a Motor Vehicle (when he attempted to hide from the tracking dog), Resisting Arrest, and Possession of Illegal Substances (12 grams of cocaine was one the illicit drugs confiscated from the scene, marijuana was another…)

Right from the start Officer Cambell’s instincts told him something was not right as he called for another car to assist.

Suddenly the police radio loudly bellowed the distinct sounds Officer Cambell calling in all units to the area as he was chasing a man running away from him.  Officer Cambell, winded from a struggle, managed to put out a description to all responding cruisers.  He also advised that there were still other suspects back inside the vehicle.

Canine Officer Sean Roycroft quickly arrived in the area of Linden and Locust Streets to assist in the manhunt.

Sergeant Ben Baxter located a quantity of cocaine not far from the intersection of Winter and Linden Streets.

A Barnstable County Identification Officer was summoned to the scene to help process evidence.

The youths, some in their late teens, were all riding in a darker colored mini-van which was subsequently towed back to the Barnstable Police Facility where it will be searched and impounded.

The incident took place in a heavily populated family neighborhood and the loud sounds emanating from the chase drew many out of their homes.  One woman was startled from her home thinking her son may have been one of the youths involved.  Another woman said that drugs and other criminal activity have caused her and her neighbors to form a Neighborhood Watch in effort assist police.  She described an ongoing battle to keep a local park free from drug activity so the local children can play and enjoy their youth with some degree of normalcy.

A man was taken into custody and will likely face a litany of charges ranging from drug offenses to Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.

Officer Cambell was back out on the road and unavailable for comment.  A police represented did confirm that he was alright.
