HYANNIS: About 10:30 AM Friday Morning, HyannisNews learned that Barnstable Police Detectives John York and Dan Turner had already made an arrest in the Willow Tree Convenience Store break in reported earlier in HyannisNews.
HyannisNews spoke to Sergeant Sean Sweeney who confirmed that Detectives were able to quickly make the arrest based on video surveillance at the Willow Tree Convenience Store break. Upon viewing the tapes, Detectives John York and Dan Turner recognized the suspect as John R. Pileeki, age 36, of Centerville. Pileeki has a significant history with the Barnstable Police Department.
Detectives York and Turner went looking for the suspect and spotted him walking on Bearses way approaching General Patton Drive. The Detectives stopped to talk to Pileeki and identified themselves as Barnstable Police Officers.
.
Pileeki was carrying a shopping bag similar in appearance to the one shown on the surveillance tapes. Upon searching the suspect, the officers determined that the bag contained cartons of cigarettes, rolled coins and other items that matched the brands and description of items taken in the break.
.
Pileeki was placed under arrest and he has been charged with Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime with Intent to Commit a Felony, Injury to Real or Personal Property, and Larceny over $250.
All charges are specific to the Willow Tree break-in. Pileeki is also a suspect in the break-in at the CITGO Station nearby at the corner of Barnstable Road and Center Street, but he was not charged with that crime at this time.
HYANNIS- At 1:55am the alarm sounded and police responded to Willow Street Market located at 15 Charles Street.
A Barnstable Police Sergeant was just about to clear the scene after checking the building when he did a double take and noticed that a screen appeared to be slashed. Upon further inspection he discovered that someone had gained access to the building and he immediately called for a K-9 unit along with additional cruisers to begin checking side streets in the immediate area.
The K-9 unit cleared the building while patrol cars made several traffic stops looking for potential suspects. Officers booked the information of all people out in the area and interviewed potential witnesses.
Dispatch called local cab companies and learned that two “fares” had been picked up close to the market during the time of the alarm. Both taxi cab drivers were summoned to the scene for questioning.
Meanwhile investigators studied store surveillance video and quickly put out a description of the suspect to all cars searching the area. The suspect is described as a white male, tall- over 6 feet, thin, grey or light blondish hair (it was difficult to discern from surveillance footage). He was wearing a white tee-shirt, possibly over another dark long sleeve shirt, he also appeared to be wearing long dark gloves (refer to Getty Gas Station break). The suspect was wearing grey pants and sneakers.
On the morning of May 27, 5 days ago on Sunday, police discovered a similar break at the neighboring Getty Gas Station on Barnstable Road. In that break the suspect gained entry by breaking a pane of glass in a side window, he apparently cut his hand in the process; if tonight’s suspect is the one in the same, that may be one explanation as to why he is seen wearing long gloves that cover the forearm... The video also shows that the suspect ran out the back of the building towards Barnstable Road.
According to radio chatter the suspect was able to make off with rolled coins from a cash drawer, along with a couple cartons of cigarettes…
A Barnstable County Identification Officer was called to the scene to check for prints and take photos. He also will work with the surveillance video, enhancing it to get even clearer images of the suspect’s face.
From start to finish the entire investigation of the scene was timely and well organized… investigators are well on their way to solving this case and possibly others.
