SOUTH YARMOUTH - At about 4:00 PM Sunday, Yarmouth Police responded to the CVS Pharmacy on Station Avenue for a rather unusual accident involving a gold Toyota Camry and the CVS Pharmacy itself. Both the car and the building received front end damage.
It all started when a woman was attempting to pull into a handicap parking space in front of the CVS building. Apparently, she hit the gas instead of the brake. Her car then shot forward, jumping the curb, narrowly missing the handicap parking sign and a support column in the front of the building until she impacted the front of the building - presumably at an angle. .
The Camry then ricocheted off the building leaving a black scuff mark on the bricks from her bumper. At this point the car was acting somewhat like a ball bouncing off a bumper in a pinball machine. It made an unbelievably tight, nearly 90 degree turn to the right and headed south down the sidewalk squeezing between the support column and the building facade. In doing this the column scraped and dented her right side door. Next she ran head on into the next column about 30 feet away, knocking it about 2 feet off its base and up against the column after that as shown in the photo.
Fortunately, nobody was hurt, and the damage to the vehicle and the building were relatively minor considering this unusual collision. The accident is under investigation by Patrol Officer. Chris Capobianco. Yarmouth Fire Rescue responded to the scene but the operator declined treatment. The Yarmouth building inspector examined the damaged columns.
